3:45 p.m. update: Phil Mickelson rolled in a 39-foot birdie putt on the ninth hole, giving him a one-shot lead Friday at the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club.
Mickelson is 4-under par for the day and 8-under for the tournament, a stroke ahead of Scott Gardiner and Robert Garrigus, who is still on the course and 2-under for the day.
Mickelson began the day one stroke out of the lead, but started quickly with birdies on the first two holes. He had four birdies and no bogeys on the front nine.
Mickelson's round has been matched by Lee Westwood, who shot a 68 and is tied for fourth, two shots behind Mickelson at 6-under for the tournament.
