Green Mile gets tweaked for Wells Fargo Championship

Quail Hollow Club's Green Mile will have a different look in the Wells Fargo Championship this year.

Club and tournament officials have decided to play the watery par-3 17th hole from the left side 'member' tees for all four days of the tournament. It's a change in a course set-up that players have suggested through the tournament's first nine years.

Earlier this year, the decision was made to play two tournament rounds from the left side, which provides a more receptive angle into the green. After deliberation, it was decided all four days will played from the left side where the hole is likely to play between 190 and 205 yards.

Grandstands have been constructed behind the left-side tee box offering a dramatic view of the 14th, 16th and 17th holes. There are no grandstands behind the right side tee box anymore.

"I think the players will be very excited by the move so we decided to do it," Quail Hollow president Johnny Harris said.

What the? That was the best spot on the course to watch from. Now there is going to be a grandstand? Not cool.

As good a player as Johnny Harris is you would think he would have made this decision 9 years ago. There is a big difference between a "hard" hole and an "unfair" hole and 17 was the most unfair hole on tour. Mr. Cobb would be happy that the hole is going to be played the way it was intended.

"The Green Mile" is the most contrived and forced nickname I have ever heard... and I wish it would just go away. Why the need to name the 3-hole stretch at all? Just to be like "Amen Corner" or the "Bear Trap"? Drop the stupid name and let the quality of those 3 holes speak for themselves.

A fan pays to watch these guys hit really tough golf shots that the average player cannot. This is a major disappointment! Having worked at Quail in the past, I am disappointed that Johnny Harris would bow to pressure from anyone. What's up John? This is certainly unlike you!
